SUPPORT FOR WESTRUM FAMILY

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Kent Westrum, a devoted hockey dad and coach who contributed over a decade of his time and passion to our association. Kent's impact extended beyond the rink, touching the lives of many in our community. His son, Alex, currently playing for Jr. Gold, began his hockey journey with AVHA as a Mite in 2014, where Kent was a familiar presence on the ice. In honor of Kent's memory, the association has made a donation to the family's GoFundMe page. Your support is appreciated during this difficult time. The GoFundMe page can be accessed here: https://gofund.me/24c544f4

NEW LEADERSHIP SCENARIO

Coaches, please take 5 minutes to dive into these impactful scenarios with your team! After practice, engage your players in a brief discussion. Allow them to share their thoughts and guide them through the conversation. The impact will be long lasting.

Scenario: Before one of your practices, another team is practicing. That team isn’t very good. Some of your teammates start making jokes about how bad the team is as they are watching. They are making mean comments and being rude.

How should you respond to this?

Should you say anything to your coach?

In what ways can you lead by example in this instance?

Coaches Note: going to the coach can come off as snitching and probably doesn’t result in any productive change. Instead, we want to encourage our athletes to stand up for the kids practicing. A leader could say something like, “Hey guys, let’s not make fun of these kids. They’re doing the best they  can out there.” Or a leader can actively show support for players practicing in some manner (fist pumps when they leave, a word of encouragement,  etc...)

The full list of scenarios and more resources from FORTIS can be found on our site at: www.avbhockey.com/fortis
